Post HarryPotterClix Variant Update Reply with quote
I'm not sure if anyone else cares, but I was recently showing HorrorClix to a friend and I dusted off my Harry Potter variant (http://www.itswickedfun.net/resources/HrCVariants/harrypotterclix.html). While doing so I tweaked the rules some and it's a bit more functional now. Here's the changes if you have any interest (like the original rules themselves, these revisions may seem daunting as well, but like the first rules it's pretty easy to pick the system up if you give it a chance--if you want a quick game to learn with, try using only 12 student victims on a single map and a 150 pt army with a minimum of 50pts of monsters per starting area):

As a general comment to start, the game works MUCH better as a solitaire game than as a two-player game. Plot twist interactions can get way too complicated and/or nonsensical, so not having them streamlines everything. Also, as someone suggested when the rules were first posted, having cards printed out for every victim makes the system A LOT easier to play--especially when you're learning the basic system. Once you get going, you'll quickly realize that most all of the characters are fundamentally similar (which is to say, I'm kind of lazy Happy ). One final quick note to begin, the better you role play the victims, the more interesting the games will be.

-----

There's a few general rules I added:

-If a victim's card says the victim should move a number of spaces and there is not an available unoccupied space, due to other monsters/victims/terrain, move that victim to the nearest unoccupied space. (this change makes it possible for victims to escape in crowded confines and avoids situations where escape is impossible)

-Victims can move through spaces occupied by vulnerable monsters as if those spaces were clear. However, victims may not end their movement in spaces occupied by vulnerable monsters. (there was no particular reason for this change--we just asked ourselves "wouldn't it be interesting if...")

-Victim tokens are not revealed until the monster stops its movement--this means that the monster will not know which victim it is attempting to slay if that token hasn't previously been revealed (there was a tendency in games to avoid all non-student/ghost victims unless you absolutely needed the points to catch up. this change adds a bit more risk to the early game, especially with characters like Snape who can instantly kill any monster with the proper die roll--in fact, in one game after we made this change, Snape killed the Alien Queen on turn one Happy )

-Even without plot twists, it can be fun to play the game with minions. Follow the standard minion rules of generating one extra minion-only action per turn. Take note that minions do make the game a lot easier for the player, so only use them if you're either having trouble winning the basic game or if it just sounds like a more fun storyline to have them around (a zombie uprising, aliens creating slasher "aliens" like in the movies, guardians creating "Inquisitorial Squad" guardians like one of the Harry Potter books, etc).

-----

There's a few rewordings to some victim token's abilities that we made to clarify things:

"Expelliarmus" - Amend the second sentence to end with "...in a straight line starting from the previous unoccupied space the monster was in". (this change is to avoid the confusion caused by the case where a monster went past a friendly monster to slay the victim and there was no place for the monster to be moved to under the original wording)

"Seeker" Ability - Add to the end of this ability "This victim ignores the effects of monsters, other victims, hindering terrain, and outdoor blocking terrain for movement purposes". (this change better reflects the original intent of the ability by adding "Leap/Climb" to the victim's abilities--they're supposed to be on brooms, after all)

-"Protector" Ability - Change the wording to read "If a monster attempts to slay a victim adjacent to this one, roll 1D6. On a result of 4-6 the victim is not slain and the monster which attempted the slaying is placed in the last unoccupied space it occupied prior to the slaying. Use this ability only if the roll on the victim's slaying table results in a successful slaying of that victim." (this change clarifies what happens when the slaying fails) Take note that teachers can still only use this ability on students, although Harry Potter can use it on any type of victim.

-----

There's also a few amendments to victim character cards which I made:

-Both Draco Malfoy & Pansy Parkinson are House Prefects and should have the following ability added to their card: "House Prefect: Add one to the 1D6 rolls on the slaying table for each adjacent Slytherin students, to a maximum result of 6".

-All teachers, not simply Minerva McGonagall, should have the House Loyalities ability: "House Loyalities: When (teacher's name) is the selected victim, when (he/she) is moved all adjacent (teacher's house) students may move along with (him/her). All students moved in this manner must end the movement adjacent to (teacher's name)".

-Remove The Bloody Baron's "Troublemaker" ability. While it can be fun, it's a bit too game-breaking.

-Draco Malfoy's "Help Me, You Idiot" ability should be updated to the following: "'Help Me You Idiots' - If Gregory Goyle or Vincent Crabbe is face up, swap the locations of either victim with Draco Malfoy. Repeat the slaying roll on the that victim's chart. If neither Gregory Goyle nor Vincent Crabbe is face up or both are already slain/escaped, Draco Malfoy is slain." (Vincent Crabbe's character card is provided later in this post)

-----

And finally, there were a few characters I added/removed. I don't have victim tokens for any of the news ones, but that's what proxy pieces are for, right?

The following characters were removed:
Bellatrix Lestrange (she didn't fit in, thematically, although she was one of my favorite victims to use), Cedric Diggory (I'm told my character abilities seemed to be based off of books five or six & he died in book four), Roger Davies (there's no printed token for him on this website and I honestly have no idea who he is from the books/movies, nor why I had him listed originally) and The Fat Friar (I wanted to add three students and the Fat Friar was the ghost I remembered least from the books/movies--all ghosts are identical now, so any one could be removed if you so choose)

The following characters were added:

Name: Vincent Crabbe
Type: Student
House: Slytherin
Speed: 4
Slaying Table:
1-4: Vincent Crabbe is slain.
5: The slaying attempt fails. Move this victim one space.
6: "Expelliarmus" - The slaying attempt fails. The victim does not move. Roll 1D6 and move the monster back that number of spaces in a straight line starting from the previous space the monster occupied. If the monster encounters hindering terrain, a wall, another monster, or another victim, stop the monster prior to the obstacle and deal one unpreventable damage to that monster.

Name: Ginny Weasley
Type: Student
House: Gryffindor
Speed: 4
Abilities:
Seeker: Roll 2D6. Replace this victim's movement value with the result. This victim ignores the effects of monsters, other victims, hindering terrain, and outdoor blocking terrain for movement purposes.
Tom Riddle's Diary: When Ginny Weasley is the chosen victim, roll 1D6. On a result of 1, Ginny Weasley can't be moved and the player gets one additional action for the current turn. On a result of 2-6, the turn is played normally and this ability has no effect.
Slaying Table:
1-2: Ginny Weasley is slain.
3: "Harry Saves the Day" - If Harry Potter is face up and adjacent to Ginny Weasley, the slaying attempt fails. Move Ginny Weasley one space.
4: The slaying attempt fails. Move this victim one space.
5: "Expelliarmus" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim does not move. Roll 1D6 and move the monster back that number of spaces in a straight line starting from the previous space the monster occupied. If the monster encounters hindering terrain, a wall, another monster, or another victim, stop the monster prior to the obstacle and deal one unpreventable damage to that monster.
6: "Protego" - The slaying attempt fails. Move the victim one space. Deal one unpreventable damage to that monster.

Name: Neville Longbottom
Type: Student
House: Gryffindor
Speed: 3
Abilties:
Herbologist: If a monster with a type of "Plant" attempts to slay Neville Longbottom, the monster will rescue him instead. No roll is made on the slaying table for the rescue. No points are awarded for this rescue, but monster is still blooded and may use powers that are dependant on victims being slain/rescued.
Slaying Table:
1-3: Neville Longbottom is slain.
4: The slaying attempt fails. Move this victim one space.
5: "Helpful Herbs" - The slaying attempt fails. Move the victim one space. Give the monster that attempted the slaying one token, or one unpreventable damage if it already had two tokens.
6: "Protego" - The slaying attempt fails. Move the victim one space. Deal one
unpreventable damage to that monster.

Name: Albus Dumbledore
Type: Headmaster (counts 100 pts for being slain or 25 pts for escaping)
House: Gryffindor
Speed: 3
Abilties:
"Order of Merlin, First Class": When Albus Dumbledore is the selected victim token, instead of moving normally place Albus Dumbledore adjacent to any "living" (non-ghost) victim.
"I'm much older, much cleverer, and much less valuable": If a monster attempts to slay a victim adjacent to this one, roll 1D6. On a result of 3-6 the victim is not slain and the monster rolls for a slaying attempt against Albus Dumbledore. On a result of 1-2, Albus Dumbledore is slain instead of the original victim and the victim on which the original slaying attempt was made in placed in the space Albus Dumbledore previously occupied. Use this ability only if the roll on the victim's slaying table results in a successful slaying of that victim
Slaying Table:
1-2: "Side-Along Apparition" - The slaying attempt fails. Move Albus Dumbledore and all adjacent student victim tokens to any place on the map where none of the tokens are on or adjacent to a starting area. If Albus Dumbledore isn't adjacent to any student victim token, move this victim to any space on the map that is not designated as a starting area
3: "Stupefy" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim foes not move. Place the monster back to the last unoccupied space it was in prior to the slaying attempt. Give the monster that attemted the slay tokens such that it has two.
4: "Expelliarmus" - The slaying attempt fails.
5: "Incendio" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim foes not move. Place the monster back to the last unoccupied space it was in prior to the slaying attempt. Give all monsters within three spaces of Albus Dumbledore one unpreventable. Give the monster that attempted the slaying two unpreventable damage and tokens such that it has two.
6: "We both know that there are other ways of destroying a man" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim does not move. The monster that attempted the slaying is killed.
(Take note that it is impossible for a monster to slay Albus Dumbledore directly. Only through an adjacent victim can Dumbledore be slain)

-----

Anyway, that's all I have. If anyone has tried the system before and has any other comments, I'd be glad to hear them.
